Gadzhi Omargadzhiev looked perfectly capable of keeping top position and grinding out Jansey Silva. Then he turned for a leg lock and left Silva screaming and tapping as a kneebar took effect in the ninth week of DWCS Season 5.

Omargadzhiev extended his unbeaten streak to 13 and notched the first kneebar submission in Contender Series history, adding to his record at the 4:19 mark of the opening frame of the middleweight headliner at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

Omargadzhiev was an easy pick when contracts were handed out on Tuesday night, joining Manuel Torres, Karine Silva, Javid Basharat and Christian Quinonez as fighters who are headed to the UFC.

Quinonez shuts out Long

Xiao Long held the center of the octagon for nearly 15 minutes and did his very best to put his fists on Christian Quinonez. All too often, though, he left his chin exposed and took plenty of hard shots as he mixed it up.

Unable to take down Quinonez, Long was forced to slug it out and hit the canvas late in the second. An uppercut and hook badly wobbled him in the third, and a final surge wasn’t enough to erase the points lost early in the three-round contest. All three judges gave Quinonez the shutout with 30-27 scores.

Basharat batters Kahlon before submission

Once Javid Basharat had Oron Kahlon on the mat, he made the most of his advantage. An elbow opened up Kahlon’s eyebrow and was a preview for the next two rounds as Basharat outclassed his opponent at every turn.

The bantamweight bout, rebooked as a 139-catchweight contest after Kahlon missed weight, got a shot of bad blood when Kahlon, a native of Israel, called Basharat, who’s from Afghanistan, a terrorist. But in the end, it was almost one-way traffic as Basharat battered his opponent before cinching a guillotine at the 4:12 mark of the third round.

Silva outsmarts Qihui with second-round sub

Yan Qihui’s power was evident not only by her hulking physique, but her ability to muscle Karine Silva around the cage. That power might have carried the day with a little more experience.

In the first round, Qihui got awfully close to giving up a rare gogoplata to the smaller Silva, and in the second, she slammed her way straight into a guillotine choke that produced an exhausted tap from the former weightlifter at 1:44 of the round.

Alleged eyepoke precedes Torres TKO

Kolton Englund provided a nicely stationary target for Manuel Torres, and unload Torres did in his short time in the cage. Were it not for an alleged eyepoke that preceded his win, Torres might have left scot-free. But the irregular ending put something of a damper on his win.

Englund pulled back after a clinch near the midway point of the opening frame and said he’d been poked in the eye. Referee Herb Dean did not stop the bout, however, and Torres pounced. With a head kick and a few punches, Englund hit the deck, setting up the TKO at the 2:10 mark of the opening frame.

Murad’s striking carries day vs. Bin’s wrestling

In another entry for the wrestling vs. striking debate in MMA judging, Olivier Murad took home a split decision by chasing Xie Bin around the cage with punches, repeatedly landing a left hand that did damage.

The rest of the time, Murad spent on his back, giving up takedown after takedown as Bin exposed a serious deficit in takedown defense. Had Bin done more damage and not been content to hang out in Murad’s open guard, he might have ended any ambiguity and earned the critical scores. In the end, though, two of three judges gave Murad a pair of 29-28s with one dissenting for Bin with the same tally.
