Bellator 183 medical suspensions: Patricky Freire, Benson Henderson potentially out six months


Lightweight headliners Patricky Freire and Benson Henderson led a list of six fighters to receive potential 180-day medical suspensions in the aftermath of Bellator 183, according to information released Tuesday by the California State Athletic Commission.

Freire defeated Henderson via split decision in a back-and-forth contest in the night’s main event. As a result, both fighters will be forced to sit out a minimum of 180 days or seek doctor’s clearance various potential injuries (Freire, right rib; Henderson; left rib, left 5th metacarpal) if they wish to return sooner, per CSAC officials.

The four other fighters who received similar potential 180-day suspensions were: Justin Linn (severe KO), Fernando Gonzalez (right thigh, left hand), Ricardo Vasquez (right knee), and Luis Jauregui (left arm).

Bellator 183 took place Sept. 23 at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. The night’s main card aired live on Spike.

A complete list of Bellator 183’s medical suspensions can be seen below. Any fighter not listed received a precautionary seven-day medical suspension.

  • Patricky Freire: Requires physician clearance on right rib pain or 180-day medical suspension
  • Benson Henderson: Requires physician clearance on left rib pain, left 5th metacarpal dislocation or 180-day medical suspension
  • Justin Linn: Suspended 180 days no contest, 180 days no contact due to severe KO
  • Fernando Gonzalez: Requires physician clearance on right thigh trauma, left hand fracture or 180-day medical suspension
  • Ricardo Vasquez: Requires physician clearance on right knee ligament strain or 180-day medical suspension
  • Luis Jauregui: Requires physician clearance on left arm with dislocation of left elbow or 180-day medical suspension
  • Lorenz Larkin: Suspended 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact due to KO
  • Mike Ortega: Suspended 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact due to KO
  • Brandon Laroco: Suspended 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact due to TKO
  • Alex Lopez: Suspended 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact due to hard bout.
  • Anthony Castrejon: Suspended 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact due to KO
