Canelo vs. Munguia took place May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 knockouts) faced off against Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 knockouts) in the night’s much-anticipated main event. The fight aired live on DAZN and PPV.com.

Round 1: Munguia takes center. Crowd is buzzing. Munguia testing the range with his jab. There’s one to the body, Munguia the clear aggressor. Canelo with a glancing right to the body. Munguia’s jab looking fast. He jabs the body. Canelo tries to get going, but Munguia ties him up. Left hook to the body by Canelo. Then a right hook to the other side. Munguia lands a left hook. They trade punches and Munguia wants to brawl. Canelo sends him back with a shot to the body. Fun start.

Round 2: Canelo takes the middle of the ring now. Munguia not impressed, he’s letting his hands go early. Canelo keeps digging to the body as Munguia smacks him with a couple of jabs. Munguia scraping the body now. He sticks that jab right in Canelo’s face. Right hook from Munguia, followed by a hard left to the body. Canelo taking some damage now. Left hook to the body by Canelo. Clean 1-2 by Canelo. Straight punches by Munguia and Canelo has to lean back to take some of the steam off of these shots. Canelo remembering to work the body as Munguia attacks.

Round 3: Munguia pumping that jab and he follows with a good right hand. Munguia doubles up on a left hook, cracking Canelo’s midsection. They trade punches, much to the delight of the fans. Canelo back to the body. Right hand up top by Canelo gets through. Munguia with plenty of volume. Counter left by Munguia. Munguia cutting the ring off now. Counter left on the money for Munguia. He’s walking Canelo down and scoring. Big finish to that round.

Round 4: Munguia with some great head movement as he out-strikes Canelo in the middle of the ring. Canelo sticking with that left hook to the body, could pay dividends in the later rounds. Fast combo by Munguia, Canelo’s defense holding up. Straight right gets through for Munguia. Canelo hits Munguia with a right. Munguia tags the body and slips another jab through. Munguia with a flurry of punches, Canelo answers with a right hand. Uppercut drops Munguia! Canelo back on the attack, but the bell rings and we’re headed to the fifth with the crowd roaring.

Round 5: Both men taking their time to get going in Round 5, understandably. Canelo wants to land another big shot, Munguia knows he’s down on the cards. They trade stiff jabs. Right hand by Munguia, but Canelo hits him right back. Munguia lunges with a power punch and almost eats an uppercut again. Jab by Canelo. Munguia fighting with great pace, but not great accuracy. Canelo in and out. Left hook, then a 1-2 combo that cracks Munguia. Another uppercut by Canelo. Great rip to the body by Munguia.

Round 6: Jab duel, Canelo breaks it up with a left hook. Munguia is bringing the heat, but he keeps letting Canelo catch him. There’s a 1-2 by Canelo. Munguia advancing with jabs and straight punches. Another left hook scores for Canelo. Munguia attacks with a combo, but can’t break through. Good straight right by Munguia, Canelo answers with a body shot. Head-body combo by Munguia, then another one. Left hook by Canelo, followed by a jab.

Round 7: Canelo comes out firing. Munguia working to reestablish the jab, but Canelo is headhunting. Good uppercut by Munguia, he backs Canelo to the ropes. Canelo punches his way out of trouble. Another straight right lands for Munguia. He’s mixing up his punches beautifully in this round. Canelo still threatening with that left hook. Canelo left hook to the body. Munguia with a glancing right. He wants to keep Canelo in the corner, but Canelo throws out that left hook and Munguia just absorbs it. Munguia staying in the pocket with Canelo. He’s doing good work inside, but again Canelo hits him with a left hand.

Round 8: Munguia jabbing away, confident that he can open up Canelo’s defense. He’s light on his feet, advancing and keeping Canelo on the back foot. Canelo quiet in this round so far with about 90 seconds to go. Munguia goes right to the body. Canelo gets his jab going to change the tempo. Munguia doing a better job of avoiding that left hook, but he takes a right uppercut for his troubles. Straight right scores for Munguia. Canelo’s jab is looking good. Round 9: Canelo leaning on that jab now. Munguia lands a straight right. He’s relentless going to the body, he wants Canelo to drop those hands. Canelo firing that uppercut, but Munguia sees it. Round 11: Both men want to establish that jab so they can open up their arsenal. Canelo with the slightest of edges. Munguia picking it up. Referee warns the fighters not to lead with their heads. Canelo scoring as he moves backward, Munguia not deterred. He attacks Canelo’s body. Right hook by Munguia. Canelo lands a right, Munguia closes the exchange with a left hook.

Round 12: Munguia charging in like he knows he’s down on the cards. Canelo’s defense as tight as it has been all fight. Body shot by a circling Canelo. He tags Munguia with a short right. We’re going to the judges and it should be Canelo retaining.
