Dana White forced to call Bono, other Irish singers after Showtime botched handling of Conor McGregor’s national anthem (Updated)

Update:

According to UFC president Dana White during a recent episode of “Embedded,” recording artist Imelda May will sing the Irish national anthem for tomorrow night’s main event.

May, 43, hails from Dublin, Ireland, and reportedly cancelled her own concert in London to fly to Las Vegas and join the Mayweather vs. McGregor festivities.

End of update

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White is used to finding last-minute replacements for major combat sports events, though it’s much easier to dig up a fighter under his employ than a singer on the other side of the world.

Especially with just three days notice.

White, who blasted the Showtime network for leaving him in a lurch, was forced to call Ireland — at all the wrong hours — in search of someone to sing the national anthem for lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

From MMA Fighting:

“Showtime basically popped it on us two days ago. You guys have to… What do you mean we have to? This is your show! I was trying to call Ireland at all the wrong times and all this stuff. We called Bono first. He said he wanted to do it, but he had a wedding this weekend. You can’t call somebody like these guys with three days notice. We’re very lucky that we pulled this off.”

I guess Sinead O’Connor was busy.

Showtime will handle the pay-per-view (PPV) duties for the upcoming boxing match between McGregor and undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather Jr., who collide this Saturday night (Aug. 26, 2017) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas,, Nevada.
