Jon Jones uninterested in UFC fight vs. ‘relatively unknown’ Stipe Miocic - ‘It wouldn’t be a real superfight’

Jon Jones has long flirted with the idea of moving up to Heavyweight after dominating the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight division with relative ease.

And after taking out Daniel Cormier via knockout in the main event of UFC 214 last night (Sat., July 29, 2017) in Anaheim, California, “Bones” further alluded to a potential move up as he continued his callout of former division champion, Brock Lesnar.

So why call out Lesnar instead of trying to win the 265-pound title against current division champion Stipe Miocic? For Jones, it doesn’t make much sense. And it definitely doesn’t make a whole lot of dollars.

“I feel like if I was going to take a fight at heavyweight it would be against a person who me and my coaches feel would be a perfect matchup for me,” Jones said during the post-fight press conference.

“Right now, Stipe is looking extremely impressive. And I believe if you get an extremely talented big guy versus an extremely talented little guy, I mean, a lot of the cards are in his favor. At the same time, I fear no man. I strike for a reason when I strike,” he added.

Still, when asked if he’d take the fight should Lesnar not return to action, Jones wasn’t as excited about it.

“I feel like Stipe is relatively unknown to the general public. It wouldn’t even be a real superfight in my opinion. I think a lot of MMA fans would be super excited about, but the general public wouldn’t care about that fight,” explained “Bones.”

“Most people don’t really know who is, with all due respect to him. So, if I’m going to sacrifice being the smaller guy, I think stylistically Brock would be a fight that makes way more sense, and the payday would be tremendous. What it would do for our sport would be tremendous. Much bigger impact. So, for many reasons, a Brock Lesnar fight just makes much more sense to me,” he concluded.

That said, a “big-money” fight against Lesnar will be hard to come by, as UFC president Dana White pumped the brakes on the potential bout, and Lesnar is still serving a suspension and it will be a while before he gets through all of the USADA prerequisites.

As for his next potential title defense, Jones refused to comment on that, saying he didn’t want to give other fighters in his division the headlines, opting to enjoy his moment and address those potential fights when the time is right.

Can’t blame him.
