Matches To Make After UFC Vegas 95

UFC Vegas 95 went down last night (Sat., Aug. 10, 2024) from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, which saw Serghei Spivac submit Marcin Tybura in the first round (see it again here) in a rematch four years in the making. In the co-main event of the evening, Chepe Mariscal won a unanimous decision over Damon Jackson, while Pannie Kianzad lost her third striaght after coming up short against Karol Rosa.

Winner: Serghei Spivac

Who He Should Face Next: Jailton Almeida

Spivac improved his current run to 4-1 in his last five fights after making quick work of Marcin Tybura, and he could expect to move up at least one spot in the rankings. Up next, a fight against Jailton Almeida, who is currently ranked No. 7, could be in order. Almeida is coming off a submission win of his own after he forced Alexander Romanov via first-round submission at UFC 302 (see it again here). A win for either man gets them close to the Top 5.

Who He Should Face Next: Ludovit Klein

Mariscal saved a little bit of face after he came in overweight for his fight against Damon Jackson by winning a unanimous decision, upping his win streak to seven in a row, four inside the Octagon. The problem with Mariscal, aside from coming in heavy, he keeps moving up from featherweight to lightweight, so he needs to pick a division once and for all and stick with it, and judging by his scale fail it needs to be lightweight. Up next, a showdown against Klein makes sense since both men are scorching hot and trying hard to crack the Top 15. Klein is coming off a win Thiago Moises earlier this year, improving his win streak to 5-0-1 in his last six fights.

Winner: Danny Barlow

Who He Should Face Next: Sam Patterson

Barlow extended his undefeated win streak to 9-0, 2-0 UFC by spoiling the debut of Nikolay Veretennikov with a razor-thin split decision win. “Left Hand 2 God” has more than proven himself thus far, but the challenges will only start to get bigger and harder. A fight against Patterson sounds about right. Patterson is currently on a two-fight win streak and is 2-1 under the UFC banner, with his most recent win coming against Kiefer Crosbie via first-roudn submission at UFC 304.

Winner: Chris Gutierrez

Who He Should Face Next: Javid Basharat

Gutierrez was initially set to face Basharat at this event before he was unfortunately forced out of the fight with an injury. Gutierrez remained on the card and defeated UFC newcomer Quang Le vi unanimous decision. I am still feeling a Gutierrez vs. Basharat showdown later this year.

Winner: Yana Santos

Who She Should Face Next: Julia Avila

Santos secured a much-needed win by defeating Chelsea Chandler via unanimous decision, snapping her three-fight losing streak and perhaps saving her UFC career, in the process. The No. 12 ranked women’s bantamweight will indeed live to fight another day inside the Octagon, and that challenge could come against Avila, who is right behind her at No. 13. Avila is coming off a third-round submission defeat at the hands of former division champion, Miesha Tate, in Dec. 2023, so she is in need of a win since she is 1-2 in her last three fights.

Winner: Toshiomi Kazama

Who He Should Face Next: Cody Gibson

Kazama earned a much-needed win himself by pulling off a come-from-behind effort against Charalampos Grigoriou. Kazama was coming into the fight having dropped his first two UFC fights via first-round technical knockout (TKO). A fight against Gibson makes sense because he, too, recently snapped his two-fight skid with a big win over Brian Kelleher, choking him out last month.
