NSAC ignores ARP, approves 8oz glove change for ‘Mayweather vs McGregor’

Safety fourth!

Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today (Weds., Aug. 16, 2017) ignored concerns voiced by the Association of Ringside Physicians (ARP) and approved a change in glove size for this month’s “Money Fight.”

The reason? A lack of scientific evidence proving it makes a difference.

Following an Instagram request from Floyd Mayweather Jr., which was later approved by opponent Conor McGregor, the commission unanimously granted a one-time waiver to lower the 10oz gloves to 8oz, though it’s unclear who the change favors, if anyone.

That said, concerns were raised about regulation being negotiated on social media.

“I do not like the Nevada State Athletic Commission being used as a pawn in a social media bout,” NSAC Chairman Anthony Marnell said. “Between these two, that part of this request pisses me off. This body is not the subject of two fighters to create social media stir and other controversy to sell tickets and to sell DirecTV.”

They need all the help they can get.

Mayweather vs. McGregor takes place a week from Saturday night (Aug. 26, 2017) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, live on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV). For a closer look at the upcoming “Money Fight” click here.
