ONE announces title fights for May, including Martin Nguyen’s return to featherweight
ONE Championship’s busy scheduled in May just got busier with the addition of a pair of title bouts featuring rematches.
Martin Nguyen, one of the company’s two-division champion, puts his featherweight belt on the line against Christian Lee in the co-main event of ONE: Unstoppable Dreams in Singapore on May 18. Six days earlier, on May 12, a strawweight title bout between Alex Silva and Yoshitaka Naito headlines ONE: Grit and Glory in Jakarta.
Nguyen (10-2) is coming off a decision loss to Bibiano Fernandes in March, when he attempted to capture his third championship. That loss snapped the featherweight and lightweight champion’s six-fight finishing streak, which includes a first-round submission victory over Lee.
Lee (9-1), brother of ONE atomweight champion Angela Lee, earned a shot at the gold after winning four in a row, all by way of stoppage. Angela Lee will headline the event in a rematch with Mei Yamaguchi.
Silva (7-1), who bounced between flyweight and strawweight throughout his ONE career, won the strawweight championship with a decision win over Naito last December, going the distance for the first time after five straight submissions.
Naito (12-1) had a perfect record in MMA going into his first fight with Silva, including seven stoppage victories. The 34-year-old Japanese talent also held the Shooto title before joining ONE Championship in 2016.
