Japanese MMA doing their fun wild stuff with a special exhibition match, featuring boxing legend, Manny Pacquiao.

We can call a rose a rose here and say that Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2024 is certainly not what it once was decades ago during the PRIDE heyday. That said, the former promoter for said organization, Nobuyuki Sakakibara, still does a great job putting together a spectacle every now and then, and this weekend (Sun., July 28, 2024), live from Saitama Super Arena in the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, we’ve got Super RIZIN 3, and it has boxing legend Manny Pacquiao taking on kickboxing star Rukiya Anpo.

Channeling the late, great Billie Mays here, but wait! There’s more!

We’ve got former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title contender, John Dodson, looking to continue his unbeaten streak in bareknuckle boxing, taking on big-punching Takaki Soya. There’s also JMMA and JKICK mainstays like RENA and Hideo Tokoro and YA-MAN and Hiromasa Ougikubo and Mikuru Asakura and, man alive, I’m looking forward to being up before the crack of dawn like I used to back during the days of DREAM (when the author was still relatively young).

Super RIZIN 3 will begin streaming LIVE on RIZIN pay-per-view (PPV) at 12 a.m. ET (5 a.m. UK time) with the ring walks for Pacquiao vs. Anpo scheduled for 5 a.m. ET (10 a.m. UK time). As with all live events, the ring walk times are approximate and subject to change, depending on how the preceding fights play out. International fans looking to watch Super RIZIN 3 can stream directly from the promotion’s website HERE.

Hiromasa Ougikubo vs. Makoto Shinryu

Round 1: The backstory here is that Shinryu is a former student of Ougikubo and they departed on poor terms. Shinryu in black, Ougikubo in green. Shinryu opens it up with a jab-overhand. Huge takedown slam from Shinryu into half guard. Ougikubo gains full guard and is plunking in right hands from bottom. Shinryu postures up, but Ougikubo pushes away and stands. Ougikubo kicking at the legs repeatedly. Both men land lefts.

I’d call that first frame for Shinryu, but these aren’t scored by rounds, just as a whole fight.

Round 2: Ougikubo blasts forward off a clash of heads into a takedown, but Shinryu pops right back up. Shinryu has a big cut over the left eye from that headbutt. They stop the action and they’re checking out Shinryu. Eventually they clean it up to the point where we can continue.

Much slower pace than earlier. Ougikubo swarms forward, meets a level change by Shinryu, but Ougikubo stuffs the takedown attempt. Left from Ougikubo. A low kick answered by a straight left from Shinryu. Right hand by Shinryu near the bell.
