Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee targeted to fight for interim lightweight title at UFC 216

Well, it looks like the UFC’s lightweight division will finally be getting some clarity.

The promotion is targeting an interim title fight between top lightweight contenders, Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee, for UFC 216 on Oct. 7 in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White revealed the match up to a group of reporters following the sixth installment of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. Heidi Fang‏ from Covering The Cage was the first to report the news.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported Monday that the fight has been agreed to, but not yet officially signed.

Ferguson, who is the current No. 1 contender of the 155-pound weight class, was scheduled to fight for the interim belt against unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov earlier this year at UFC 209, but the bout was scrapped when Nurmagomedov was hospitalized during his weight cut. Ferguson last fought last November, when he outpointed former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 3. Ferguson is on an impressive nine-fight win streak.

Meanwhile, Lee, who is ranked seventh in the division, is coming off a controversial submission victory over Michael Chiesa back in June at UFC Fight Night 112. The 24-year-old Detroit fighter is 16-2 in his fighting career, which includes a recent five-fight win streak.
