UFC 214 results: ‘Cormier vs. Jones 2’ live updates, fight recaps - 'Prelims'

One of the best fight cards of the year will unfold later tonight (Sat., July 29, 2017) at UFC 214 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., when UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier finally meets former divisional overlord Jon Jones in a red-hot rematch. On top of that, Tyron Woodley will put his UFC welterweight title on the line opposite proven veteran Demian Maia, while Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger battle it out for the vacant UFC women’s featherweight title.

But, before the premier bouts get underway on PPV starting at 10 p.m. ET, UFC 214's “Prelims” action will go down on Fight Pass starting at 6:30 p.m. ET and FXX starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Brian Ortega vs. Renato Moicano

Top-flight submission specialist Ortega (12-0) stepped back inside of the cage for the first time in over a year when he met fellow undefeated featherweight Moicano (11-1-1). Ortega landed some crisp strikes early and ended up hurting Miocano. The Brazilian responded with some of his own pressure, but Ortega continued to dictate the pace. A bloodied Miocano started to show some wear and tear towards the end of the frame. In Round 2, the Brazilian started to land some crisp counters, including a four-piece melee that pummeled Ortega up high and to the body. He also landed a hook-hook-body kick combination that put Ortega on the back of his feet. Ortega responded as well, landing a come-up spinning elbow after faking a takedown attempt. He then added a hard combination to the body at the end of the frame. After 10 minutes of entertaining action, the undefeated featherweights continued suit in Round 3. Both men landed early and often, but Ortega started to open up while Miocano showed some signs of slowing down. Ortega stretched his offensive zone by landing body shots and combinations around Moicano’s defensive guard. In return, Miocano shot for the takedown and dragged Ortega to the canvas. That ended up being a mistake. Ortega immediately locked up a tight guillotine choke that forced Miocano to tap in the third.

Andre Fili vs. Calvin Kattar

Another UFC newcomer was on full display as featherweight prospect Kattar (17-2) stepped up on short notice in his debut to challenge Team Alpha Male veteran Fili (16-5). While Fili pressed the action early, Kattar kept “Touchy” at bay with reaching jabs and aggressive counters. Kattar even landed a nice body shot after Fili started to find a home for his leg kicks. Towards the end of the first, Kattar blasted Fili with a huge uppercut, but the featherweight veteran responded with a crisp knee inside. In Round 2, Kattar started to time his shots more and began to figure out Fili’s range. Kattar then landed a huge right hand that pushed “Touchy” back into the cage. The UFC newcomer started to load up a little more, but that didn’t bode all too well when Fili went back to his kicks. Fili was able to find a home for some solid combinations towards the end of the frame before Kattar wobbled him with a crisp straight right. Possibly down 0-2 on the scorecards, Fili opened up a little more aggressively in the third round, yet was unable to find much success. Kattar hung in the pocket when needed and landed every time a window presented itself. Fili pieced together a nice combination with over a minute to go, but it simply wasn’t enough. To much surprise, Kattar rose above his underdog label and walked away with the unanimous decision win.

Kailin Curran vs. Alexandra Albu

In the Fight Pass headliner, women’s strawweight prospect Curran (4-5) tried to improve on her 1-4 promotional record when she welcomed rising Russian contender Albu (7-0) back to the Octagon. It was early pressure from Albu, who landed a huge right hand along the cage followed by knees in the clinch. After finding a home for a crisp combination, Albu pulled guard and tried to sink in a leg lock. Curran escaped and scored some needed ground-and-pound. In Round 2, Curran offered a little more versatility, launching front kicks, high kicks, and continuously moving her feet. But after securing a headlock and sweeping Curran to the canvas, Albu started to land big hammer fists and elbows in top control. After the action returned to the feet, Albu found a home for crushing body kicks, too, as Curran hung in the pocket and launched combinations of her own. The third round saw a desperate Curran rush Albu and hurt the Russian with a head kick along the cage during the first exchange. Albu returned the favor by eating everything Curran threw and landing hard right hands from outside the pocket. That was until Curran found top control in a scramble to the canvas, which allowed the young Hawaiian to score points from half guard and further bloody Albu’s face. In the end, despite her last ditch efforts, Curran didn’t do enough on the scorecards as Albu walked away with the unanimous decision win.

Eric Shelton vs. Jarred Brooks

The lone flyweight matchup on the card saw former Ultimate Fighter standout Shelton (10-4) attempt to nab his first UFC victory when he took on undefeated newcomer Brooks (13-0). While Brooks started things off with a few takedowns along the cage. Even though Shelton was throwing offense from the bottom, including hard elbows to the lower back, he still out-landed Brooks in the first round. Shelton was quicker on his feet in the second, though, defending a Brooks takedown and opening up with more striking. Shelton even landed a short-lived takedown along the cage before Brooks threatened with a guillotine. With the score seemingly tied up at 1-1, Brooks came out a little more aggressive in Round 3. That was before Shelton cracked him with a huge right uppercut that temporarily dropped the UFC newcomer. Brooks would recover and stay mobile on his feet, while Shelton tried to stalk him down and land another big shot. In the end, it was Brooks who escaped with the split-decision victory.

Josh Burkman vs. Drew Dober

In the opening bout of the evening, MMA journeyman Burkman (28-16) looked to end a three-fight losing streak when he took on rising lightweight prospect Dober (18-8). It didn’t take too long for Dober to strike gold. After exchanging multiple kicks with Burkman, Dober caught the veteran with a nasty left hand over the shoulder. Burkman dropped to the canvas like a sack of potatoes and the referee jumped in for the one-punch knockout stoppage.
