UFC 238 Results: ‘Cowboy’ Blows His Nose, Loses After Doctor Stoppage

Come for the championship double dip, enjoy the “People’s Main Event.”

The fantastic Lightweight showdown between the division’s former interim champion, Tony Ferguson, and its most watchable action fighter, Donald Cerrone, went down tonight (Sat., June 8, 2019) during UFC 238’s pay-per-view (PPV) main card from inside United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

And, as advertised, it was a great back-and-forth brawl while it lasted, with Ferguson ultimately winning via technical knockout after swelling Cerrone’s face shut.

Cerrone got things going with a low kick to Ferguson’s knee, which he followed up with some nice jabs to keep him at bay. Ferguson, as usual, stood right in front of Cerrone, eating shots here and there just to land a few of his own. Cerrone began to tee off, though, but Ferguson continued to push forward. Ferguson landed a great standing elbow, then a left hand and a knee to Cerrone’s face, eating more shots along the way. Indeed, Cerrone continued to land at will, splitting Ferguson’s left eye open. Nevertheless, he continued with the constant pressure, forcing Cerrone to fight off his back foot. It was a wild exchange to end the round, with Ferguson landing several hard kicks to Cerrone’s mid-section before they headed to their respective corners for a quick break.

Ferguson came running out of his corner to start the second stanza, drilling Cerrone with solid jab and then a hard left hand. He was pushing a torrid pace, bouncing countless jabs off Cerrone’s face. Cerrone returned fire, but Ferguson seemed unfazed. Cerrone’s nose was a bloody mess thanks to all the jabs and spinning shit. Cerrone was able to score a takedown midway through the round, but Ferguson popped off the canvas like a slice of toast. Ferguson continued to just throw arms and legs at Cerrone, who appeared to be withering as the second round started to wind down. As the round came to a close, Ferguson popped Cerrone with a hard jab well after the bell, triggering a “hard warning” from the referee.

Between rounds, Cerrone blew his broken nose, causing his right eye to swell shut. Cerrone tried to pry it open with his fingers, but the referee called in the ringside physician to check on “Cowboy.” Then he called for an instant replay to see if the blow after the bell caused the damage, which for all intents and purposes ended the fight. It didn’t — Cerrone never should have blown the bloody snot rocket. As a result, Ferguson was issued the technical knockout win via doctor’s stoppage.

It is what it is — Cerrone looked like hell:

So, Ferguson has not lost a UFC fight since May 2012. That’s 12 wins in nine years against some of the best 155-pound fighters in the word. And yet company President, Dana White, is still wishy-washy about giving him the title shot he rightfully deserves.

That’s some bullshit. And, once again, Ferguson proved him all wrong once again.
