Conor McGregor claims early stoppage - ‘Let Floyd Mayweather put me down’

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor did much better than most people thought when he went 10 hard rounds with undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. last night (Sat., Aug. 26, 2017) live on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

McGregor stood tall and delivered on his word to sling leather and try to pressure “Money.” Mayweather remained patient, peppered McGregor in the later rounds, and eventually worked towards a TKO finish in Round 10. McGregor spoke about the stoppage after the fight and explained why he thought the bout should have continued.

“I thought it was close though and I thought it was a little early of a stoppage,” McGregor said during the post-fight interview. “I get like that when I’m tired. I get a little wobbly and flowy. But f**k, get me into the corner and I’ll recover and I’ll come back. And I’d like it to hit the floor. There’s a lot on the line here, (Byrd) should have let me keep going I thought, but fair play to (Mayweather).”

While McGregor’s outlook on the stoppage may carry some weight, Mayweather was tagging the UFC champion at will. McGregor ate a bunch of hard right hands before the TKO stoppage, yet “Notorious” would have preferred to hit the canvas.

“I’ve been here before,” McGregor said. “I’ve been strangled on live TV and came back, so I don’t know. I would have liked him to just let it go. F**k it. I got in here in the squared circle, everything was different, it was a lot more fun.”

“That’s exactly what it is, is fatigue,” McGregor continued. “That’s why I thought the ref could have just let it keep going, let me go down. Let the man put me down. Wobbly and fatigue, that’s energy, that’s not damage. I’m clear headed.”

What say you, Maniacs? Was the “Money Fight” stopped too early?
