Till vs. Thompson announced for UFC Liverpool main event
Darren Till got the big fight he wanted in his hometown of Liverpool, England.
The unbeaten welterweight meets two-time title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the main event of UFC Liverpool on May 27 at the Echo Arena, officials announced Thursday.
Talks of the bout were first reported by BJPenn.com and later confirmed by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.
Till, 25, had mentioned Thompson as one of his preferred opponents and he is getting his wish as he headlines the UFC’s first trip to Liverpool. The Scouser is coming off of a first-round TKO of veteran Donald Cerrone at UFC Gdansk last October and he has yet to taste defeat in 17 pro bouts.
Thompson (14-2-1) ended a two-fight winless streak with a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217 in New York City this past November. The 35-year-old striking specialist was coming off of a pair of failed bids to dethrone welterweight king Tyron Woodley, a majority draw at UFC 205 and a majority decision loss at UFC 209.
In 12 UFC appearances, “Wonderboy” is 9-2-1.
