What’s next for Sergio Pettis after earning fourth straight win at UFC Mexico City?

Sergio Pettis picked up his seventh UFC win and perhaps the biggest of them all after edging out Brandon Moreno in the main event of last night’s (Sat., Aug. 5, 2017) UFC Fight Night 114 event in Mexico City, Mexico.

In doing so, “The Phenom” shed the label of up-and-coming prospect to full-on contender in a Flyweight division that desperately needs some new challenges for division kingpin, Demetrious Johnson.

His seven wins also equals he amount his big brother and former UFC Lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, has inside the eight-walled cage.

Surprisingly enough, Sergio didn’t call for a title fight next, though he has already clarified that he does not fear “Mighty Mouse,” who has made a mockery of the division during his record-setting title reign.

Still, it’s a bold move for Sergio, who instead called for the promotion to re-book him against Henry Cejudo after their initial bout was scrapped back at UFC 211 this past May due to a last-minute injury to Henry.

Plus, Pettis is on a four-fight win streak, while Cejudo is on a two-fight skid. On paper, it’s a high risk, low reward fight for Pettis.

But, let’s look at the potential positives, as a win over a former title challenger and Olympic gold medalist could be what Pettis needs in order to get next in the title line after Ray Borg.

At the end of the day, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a contender eager to take out all of the obstacles standing in front of him before getting to the big dance, as opposed to just waiting around for a title fight to land in his lap.
